Barong and Rangda Balinese Temple carving
Barong, the friendly dragon, and Rangda, the demon queen of the leyaks, are constantly at odds with one another.Terrifying to behold, the child-eating Rangda leads an army of evil witches against Barong, the leader of the forces of good.
In a popular tourist attraction and custom in Bali (in which a priest must always be present to sprinkle holy water). You will see Balinese performers in full dress and masks doing these dances,
These dances depict the ongoing battle between Barong and rangda. They are interesting to watch as the barong have no arms or hands and must use their feet,
They battle until one has a victory, Each victory is followed by defeat, and yet a new victory. It is this way because good must always have evil in order to exist and vice versa symbolizing the everlasting struggle in nature.
For those of you who are gamers, you may be familiar with a Final Fantasy XIII wild enemy known as a Rangda.
In our carving you will see one figure standing atop two others, the two on the bottom are Barong and Rangda engaged in a struggle. We Think this carving is rescued from a temple in Bali. The artisan was very talented as seen in the attention to detail. Woody is pleased to offer this fantastic addition to your Balinese cultural collection
